Bottom-up anxiety

Comes from things that trigger your nervous system and instantly make your body feel unsafe. For example, someone's tone that reminds you of your mom criticizing you, someone's body language that reminds you of a toxic ex partner, or a smell that reminds you of the hospital you had surgery in. The body has an automatic reaction, then the anxious thoughts follow.

Top-down anxiety

This is the anxiety that happens when your boss sends you a Slack message at 8pm, and you immediately think, "I must be getting fired". When you leave a dinner party thinking, "Did I say all the wrong things"? When your stomach feels off, and you think "Omg, something in my body is not right". Or when someone calls you, and you don't feel like answering, but you think, "I don't want to upset them", so you answer anyway.

And here's the crucial part most approaches miss: these two types feed into each other, creating a vicious cycle that keeps you trapped.
